History
Greenbelt has a strong history in social organization and as a result, is the home of many cooperatives. The Greenbelt Co-op Supermarket and Pharmacy is also known as Greenbelt Consumer Cooperative. The Cooperative’s predecessor was Greenbelt Consumer Services. Greenbelt Consumer Services opened its grocery store in 1937, but was purchased in 1940 by a group of residents known as the Greenbelt Cooperative. Over the next 20 years, the Cooperative owned a variety of services including grocery stores, gas stations, a furniture store, drug store, barber shop, beauty parlor, movie theater, laundromat, bus service and even a few shopping centers in Greenbelt and the surrounding suburbs.

In the early 1980s, the Greenbelt Cooperative decided to dismantle its network of stores. As a result, a group of Greenbelt citizens, the Greenbelt Consumers Cooperative, got together and purchased the supermarket and pharmacy in Greenbelt in 1984. The focus of this store was to provide the widest products possible and outstanding customer service. In fact, it was written into the by-laws that this new cooperative would not expand beyond Greenbelt’s city limits.

Today, the Co-op, as it’s called, continues its commitment to the community of Greenbelt. This is evident by its contracts with local artisans, farmers and other vendors, employment of local residents, support of local non-profits and the other ways the Co-op supports the local economy.

It’s rare that a member doesn’t bump into a neighbor while shopping. You’ll always get service with a smile. We hope that you’ll become a part of our unique family.
